There is little place better to head than online auction site eBay when looking for a collectable rare coin.
Among the plethora of coins is a “rare” 50p coin, which has been listed on eBay for a whopping £3,500.
The coin, selling for 7,000 times its face value, features Beatrix Potter’s beloved Peter Rabbit’s face, and was minted to commemorate the life of the British writer.
Celebrating the 150th anniversary of her birth, the coin is one in a series of 50ps featuring Beatrix’s characters – also including Jemima Puddle-Duck and Tiggy-Winkle.
This particular coin was listed by eBay user chineseorchid-2008 and is said to have minting defects.
The seller, based in Prestatyn and boasting 100 per cent positive feedback, has listed the item with the title: “Rare Peter Rabbit Half Whisker 50p Coin 2016.”
The seller claims the coin has shorter whiskers than others and notes this is a “minting error”, however, it looks similar to other circulated versions of the same piece.
Giving a little more away, chineseorchid-2008 wrote: “Rare Peter Rabbit 50p with shorter half whisker on left side. In good condition. Perfect for any collector.
“Will be sent in a box and sent recorded delivery. Offers considered. Will post worldwide please contact for postage costs.”
But the £3,500 price tag is only the starting bid, with the seller possibly expecting to fetch more for the rare coin that the asking price.
Minted in 2016 the coin was designed by Emma Noble and pays homage to Beatrix Potter’s first character, Peter Rabbit.
With Peter Rabbit etched in capital letters across the top of the coin, the coin has proved popular with collectors, according to the Royal Mint.
The website’s listing says: “This brand new Beatrix Potter 50p coin has been issued to celebrate the life and work of Beatrix Potter on the 150th Anniversary of her birth.
“Struck by The Royal Mint, this coin has proved to be extremely popular with coin collectors.
“The Beatrix Potter 50p is protectively encapsulated and Certified as superior Brilliant Uncirculated quality.”
Just one of the 54 50p coins in circulation, the Peter Rabbit 50p had a mintage of 9,600,000 – actually rated as common on scarcity index, ChangeChecker.
Chineseorchid-2008 has listed the coin for a 10-day long auction, and has a total of 17 other items for sale including women’s clothing and shoes.
Last week another “rare” Peter Rabbit 50p sold for £600 on eBay, a fraction of the newly listed coin’s £3,500 asking price.
The coin was titled “Peter Rabbit 2016 UK 50p Silver Proof Coin”, and featured a coloured design.
Based in Onchan on the Isle of Man, the seller described the coin as: “RARE 2016 Royal Mint Beatrix Potter – Peter Rabbit Silver Proof Colour 50p Coin”.
The coin received one winning bid for a staggering £600 from an unnamed bidder.
