Elon Musk, 47, is a South-African born business magnate, investor and engineer.

He currently holds the title of CEO for three multi-million pound businesses, aerospace manufacturer SpaceX, electric car auto manufacturer Tesla Motors and implantable brain-computer interfaces business Neuralink.

The 47-year-old is also the co-founder of Paypal, which was acquired in 2002 by eBay for a staggering $1.4 billion.

After such a huge payout and founding such successful companies, how much is the investor, engineer and inventor actually worth in total?

According to the Bloombery Billionaire Index, Elon Musk’s net worth as of June this year has hit $24.6 billion, making him, the 23rd richest person in the world – according to Forbes.

His net worth soared to an all-time high after he announced on Twitter that Tesla might go private, with shares going up by a whopping 30 per cent.

The tech entrepreneur is revolutionising transportation on earth and in space, with SpaceX now worth a staggering $20 billion.

It was announced last year that Elon would begin building the necessary ships this year to support a mission to Mars in 2024.

Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and at the age of 10 developed an interest in computing.

At the age of 12, he taught himself computer programming and sold the code of a BASIC-based video came he created called Blastar to a magazine for around $500.

Fast forward to 1995 and Elon and his brother started Zip2, a web software company which developed and marketed an internet “city guide” for the newspaper industry.

When Elon wasn’t allowed by shareholders to become CEO, he sold the company, making his first huge paycheck of $22 million from his seven per cent share.

From then on Elon went from strength-to-strength, founding Paypal and going onto sell the business to eBay for a whopping $1.5 billion in 2002, receiving a payout of $165 million.

In 2001, Musk conceptualised “Mars Oasis”, a project to land a miniature experimental greenhouse on Mars, in an attempt to regain public interest in space exploration.

However earlier this month his plans of creating an inhabitable world on Mars were dashed, when a study in a science journal Nature Astronomy revealed that it wouldn’t have a stable ecosystem.

Mars projects aside, he also had Tesla Motors, which he founded in 2003 and is reported to have a market value of $650 billion.

Ever controversial, his fortune plummeted by $1 billion in May, when it was reported that he had insulted his analysts and refused to answer their “boring, bonehead” questions.

Last month, the multi-billionaire offered his assistance to the rescuers during the Tham Luang cave rescue, ordering his employees to build a “kid-size submarine”. However, the idea was deemed impractical.

With an immense and growing fortune under his belt, Elon now resides in the exclusive Bel Air area of Los Angeles.

He has five children from his first marriage to writer Justine Musk, and has remarried twice, both times to British actress Talulah Riley.
