After garnering more backing in the wake of Luther being confirmed to return, Idris Elba is the one currently getting all of the attention, according to Ladbrokes.
Although he remains the joint-fifth favourite with the firm, it seems most of the money over recent days has been on him.
Calling the interest “staggering”, spokesperson Alex Apati said: “Punters clearly think they’re onto something and when it comes to Daniel Craig’s replacement and the odds suggest it may well be Elba, Idris Elba.”
Elba has odds of 8/1 with Ladbrokes to be the next James Bond, joined with Cillian Murphy.
Ahead of them are Jack Huston and Aidan Turner in joint third (6/1) and long-running frontrunners James Norton and Tom Hardy as joint favourites (3/1).
“Any female” is an option that can be backed on 12/1.
Last week Coral said they had a similar amount of support swelling for Elba, also cutting his odds down to 8/1 from 12/1.
Their spokesperson said: “Idris Elba has been suggested as a candidate for the next James Bond for a while now but if the bets we’re seeing are anything to go by he would be a hugely popular pick as 007.”
Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond before Daniel Craig, has seemingly supported Tom Hardy for the job.
“Daniel Craig has been an incredible Bond. He’s very physical, he looks lethal. You genuinely believe this is someone who could kill a man,” he told the Daily Mail.
“He will do the next movie, and then I think Tom Hardy could be a good Bond.”
He added: “I’d be happy to see him do it. You need an actor who can put a bit of wiggle into it – that’s what makes Bond.”
Craig confirmed last summer that the next Bond film will be his last.
James Bond 25 is expected in the back half of 2019.
