That’s according to former NBA star Tracy McGrady, who believes Leonard should stick it out in San Antonio.
The Spurs face arguably their most important summer of this century when they sit down and discuss the future of Leonard.
The 2014 NBA Finals MVP can be offered a ‘supermax’ extension worth £219million.
But reports over the past year have speculated about a break in the relationship between Leonard and the franchise.
He played just nine regular season games last year after struggling with a persistent quad injury.
And recent rumours have suggested the Spurs could look at trading the 26-year-old this summer, as opposed to offering him the huge deal.
Popovich is expected to sit down with Leonard in the coming weeks ahead of the NBA Draft.
And McGrady believes Leonard will want to know how long Popovich, whose wife sadly passed away during the playoffs, plans to stay in San Antonio.
“In all seriousness, the question coming from the player is ‘I want to know how long you’re going to be here Pop’,” McGrady said on The Jump.
“I know what happened during this season with his wife.
“‘I want to know if you still have the desire and the commitment to coach me if I sign this extension.’
“Kawhi shouldn’t go anywhere. Kawhi, with this team, is a pretty good team and very competitive in the Western Conference.
“I think he should re-sign.”
