Maleficent on TV sequel Release date, cast, pictures | Films | Entertainment

Maleficent is back on UK television screens later this afternoon.

The huge Disney smash hit launched a new wave of live action versions of classic fairy tales, but did it with a twist.

Jolie’s revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty tale recast the cackling evil icon as a misunderstood creature, betrayed by the man she loved.

Audiences lapped it up, to the tune of $758million at the global box office and you wouldn’t need a crystal ball to know a sequel was on the cards.

Maleficent hit screens way back in 2014 and the follow-up drifted in the schedules, but fans were finally rewarded when Jolie posted the first pictures from the set of the sequel.

The star has those iconic horns firmly back in place, although the rest of her outfit didn’t exactly scream magical fairytale.

The actress was shown larking around on set in just a bath robe with her young co-star  Elle Fanning, who returns as the innocent snoozy Princess Aurora.

MALEFICENT 2 CAST: Jolie and Fanning are joined by Hollywood royalty Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith.

The film also stars Brits Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein and Robert Lindsay. Harris Dickinson replaces Brendon Thwaites as Prince Phillip but Sam Riley returns as man-crow Diaval.

Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville are also back as the well-meaning but hopeless pixies.

MALEFICENT 2 OFFICIAL PLOT SYNOPSIS: “A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after Maleficent, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora.

“Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”

RELEASE DATE: The movie has started filming but no formal release date for 2019 has been announced yet.

Maleficent on is BBC1 on Saturday June 9 at 6.05pm
