As she joins the Royal Family, Meghan’s name will change, although she will not be altering her first name.
Choosing a new first name has been custom for royal brides, with Kate Middleton changing her name to Catherine when she married in 2011.
The Queen has bestowed a dukedom on Prince Harry and his new wife, which will give her a formal title.
So, what will Meghan Markle’s full name be now that she has wed?
Meghan will henceforth be known as Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Sussex.
Prince Harry, meanwhile, has now become the Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.
Unlike Kate, Meghan will not be changing her first name – although on her birth certificate, her first name is actually Rachel. She chooses to use her middle name, Meghan, instead in day-to-day life.
In a statement released yesterday morning, Kensington Palace confirmed the titles the Queen had chosen for her grandson and his new bride.
It read: “The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince Henry of Wales.”
“His titles will be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.
“Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Ms. Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.”
Meghan makes history as the first ever Duchess of Sussex. While there has been one Duke of Sussex in the past, there has not been a Duchess of Sussex.
The last and only holder of the Duke of Sussex title, Prince Augustus Frederick, the ninth child of Prince George III 1773 – 1843, was married twice, to Lady Augusta Murray and to Lady Cecilia Gore.
However, because both marriages broke the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, neither marriage was considered legitimate and therefore neither lady was given the title Duchess of Sussex.
This means Meghan will be the first ever Duchess of Sussex in British history, upon marrying Prince Harry today.
Meghan stunned in a wedding gown designed by Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of Givenchy.
Meghan’s wedding dress had a bateau neckline, a nipped in waist, long sleeves and it was traditional white.
Prince Harry’s bride wore a diamond encrusted tiara on top of her hair in pictures.
She also wore large diamond earrings in her ears as she smiled in the car.
