Princess Eugenie wedding: Why Jack Brooksbank won’t be getting a title

Princess Eugenie will marry Jack Brooksbank on 12 October at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Jack – who is technically a commoner by birth – will not receive a royal title upon his marriage, it is believed.

This is in contrast to the first royal wedding of this year, that of Meghan Markle, 37, to Prince Harry.

The couple were awarded the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex upon their wedding.

Why will Jack not receive a royal title? Grant Harrold, former royal butler, explained to Express.co.uk this is “normal practice”.

“Not all members of the Royal family are given further titles,” Grant said.

“In fact, it has become normal practice for Royals not to be given titles.”

“An example would be HRH Princess Anne’s husband not getting a title.

“Princess Anne’s children, Peter and Zara do not have royal titles either as they are not male lined grandchildren of the monarch (1917 letters patent).”

In contrast, Princess Eugenie and her sister Princess Beatrice, 29, were both given royal titles because they are the daughters of Prince Andrew, who is the Queen’s son.

So who else can receive a royal title? “Royal titles are normally reserved for more senior Royals or those in direct line of male succession as we have seen with The Duke of Cambridge’s wife and children,” Grant explained.

Prince Edward’s children were also given royal titles: Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Royal titles are still governed by the 1917 letters patent which was set up by King George V.

However, Queen Elizabeth made a revision known as The Queen’s Letters Patent in 2012, which ensured all of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales’ children (now the Cambridges) would have royal titles. It is within the Queen’s power to make further changes if she sees fit.

It was originally believed Jack might be granted the title Earl of Northallerton – which is currently vacant – upon marrying Eugenie.

However, a source told the Mail Online this will not be the case – but that Eugenie does not mind.

If Jack does not take on a title, it is most likely Princess Eugenie will be known as HRH Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank after her wedding.

Meanwhile, Jack’s name will stay the same and he will technically remain a “commoner”.

“Eugenie couldn’t care less about titles and is perfectly happy to be Mrs Brooksbank,” the source told the Daily Mail.
