Raphael Varane: France star breaks deadlock against Uruguay in World Cup quarter-final | Football | Sport

The Real Madrid star has enjoyed an excellent tournament for France and in the 40th minute, he put his country ahead from a free kick.

Corentin Tolisso was brought down by Rodrigo Bentancur midway inside Uruguay’s half and from the resulting dead ball, Antoine Griezmann delivered a perfect cross which met Varane’s run and he flicked a header into the far corner.

Ex-Chelsea striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 live: “Real quality form Antoine Griezmann.

“He has a little run up, and then checks his run, before whipping a tantalising cross into the box.

“Raphael Varane uses the pace of the ball and whips his header into the far corner.

“No chance for the keeper and now we’ve got a game on.”

Varane is the first French player to score in a World Cup quarterfinal since Thierry Henry against Brazil in 2006.

In that year France went on to reach the final where they were beaten by Italy on penalties.
