The Swiss star has been relegated from Centre Court for the first time in three years.
Federer takes on No 8 seed Kevin Anderson in the quarter-finals but he must now find a way to adjust to unfamiliar surroundings.
Not since a last-eight showdown with Gilles Simon in 2015 has Federer graced the grass on Court 1.
The match will get underway at 1pm but supporters are furious that the world No 2 has been dropped from the ground which has seen him win eight Wimbledon titles.
One fan wrote on Twitter: Why is #1 seed – @RogerFederer /The GOAT – playing on Court 1 while #12 seed plays on Centre Court? The quarter-finals. We like Djokovic too but this is ridiculous.”
Another added: “Roger Federer 8 time Wimbledon Champion Defending Champion No 1 seed Playing against the No 8 seed Relegated to Court 1????? This needs answering @Wimbledon.”
Meanwhile, other supports scrambled to try and swap their Centre Court tickets for a seat on Court 1 to catch a glimpse of Federer.
“My biggest dream is to watch Roger Federer play, I have CC ticket and am willing to swap it to watch at least 1/2 RF set at court 1, so yes you can watch like 1/2 RF sets and then swap with me and watch Nole and then Nadal whole match!! dm,” one user wrote.
Another desperate fan pleaded: “Any #Nadal fans want to swap a pair of CC tickets for a pair of comparable Court 1 tickets?”
And former British No 1 Andy Murray understands the supporters’ unrest.
“I think Rafa and Del Potro had to be on Centre Court,’ he told the BBC.
“The fans on Court One will love seeing [Federer], maybe Centre Court ticket holders will be upset, but they have two brilliant matches to look forward to.
“Roger is playing extremely well, moving well.
“Against Anderson he has won all four matches and never dropped a set, so I expect him to comfortably get through.
“It would take an unbelievable serving performance and for Roger had a bad serving day to cause an upset.”
